Improving communication

Since January, a multidisciplinary committee led by W. Lee Titsworth, M.D., Ph.D., a resident in the department of neurosurgery, has made nursing communication orders, or NCOs, more efficient at UF Health Shands Hospital. Titsworth and his team found that text nursing communication orders from physicians to nurses would often stay in a nurse’s queue, even after they had been resolved, and were sometimes unclear. To resolve this problem, Titsworth and his team created an educational program called the Nursing Communication Initiative. By educating all of UF Health’s housestaff on how to properly use NCOs, Titsworth said the amount of NCOs has gone from around 370 per day to around 190 per day.
