Bridging the language divide

UF Health Shands provides interpretation services to thousands of patients and their families

Each year, UF Health Shands provides interpretation services to thousands of patients and their families with Limited English Proficiency and hearing impairment.

Three full-time medical interpreters are available through the UF Health Sebastian Ferrero Office of Clinical Quality and Patient Safety’s Patient Experience Team. They ensure accurate communication with Spanish-speaking patients, and a 24-7 phone interpretation service is available after hours and for individuals who speak languages other than Spanish.

In honor of International Translation Day on Sept. 30, UF Health Shands celebrated the team of medical interpreters. Hundreds of patients, visitors, faculty, staff and students gathered to speak to the team and learn more about how UF Health’s interpretation services break language and cultural barriers to help ensure quality care for our patients.

Accurate communication is essential for high quality and compassionate care. Call the Patient Experience department at 352-353-5084 to request interpretation services.
